Climactically Fucked
Global warming is fast becoming an urgent concern. However, although parliamentary debate surrounds implementation of Kyoto, and the 2006 G8 summit revolved heavily around global energy solutions, there is (not surprisingly) no attitude change within corporate and bureaucratic circles—their idea of “sustainability” revolves more around manipulating the current energy crisis to benefit their bottom lines [...]
I Am Canadian
As Canadians, we tend to pride ourselves on a vision of what our country is and what we stand for that no longer holds true. The common sentiment of “not being American” is disappearing as our voting habits and policy changes lean in the opposite direction. Our national anthem sings about “the true north strong and free,” but our northern citizens are held captive by their commitment to their traditional lifestyle, as their ability to sustain themselves declines due to atmospheric changes.
Shattered
They’re standing opposite each other, and he marvels at the way the sleek black fabric of her dress drapes across her skin, the contrast bringing her delicate features mysterious beauty, dark hair falling on her shoulders, eyes cast downwards. Car Crash Nightmare
If I complained to you about our North American car culture and my need to escape my automobile dependence. you would say that I’m crazy, that it’s nothing new. You would ask me to tell you something you haven’t heard me rant about before (I suppose I rant to you too often). I would then [...]
Dear Friends, Let’s Think About Each Other
Few people sit down to write letters anymore. No, I don’t mean a cover letter, or a business letter, or a letter to your bank explaining why you’re in debt. I mean old-fashioned-writing-to-someone-you-care-about letter writing. In this high-speed technological age, long-distance friendships are primarily maintained by phone calls, or else by e-mail, instant messaging, text [...]
I Always Try to Make You Happy
“Would you like your receipt in the bag?” The phrase is almost as monotonous and repetitive as the one threatened by elementary school teachers to under performing students: “Would you like fries with that?” Why, then is a job in retail considered superior to one in fast food services—a position I myself have never dared [...]
