Loop Clothing’s First Birthday

Loop Clothing’s First Birthday

“EXPERIENCE where LIFE meets STYLE” – such is the motto of hip Waterloo clothing retailer Loop Clothing. I say clothing retailer, but in fact, to label Loop as as such would be a gross understatement. Loop Clothing is so much more than just fashion…they’re culture. Why else have numerous publications covered the store’s story, and why else would the CBC be clamouring for an interview?

The Sour Keys Keep Time

The Sour Keys Keep Time

When the idea of writing an article about time was presented to me, I could not help but immediately think of The Sourkeys. Time, or more specifically timing, is the key to innovation in the music industry and The Sourkeys are proof of that. With their unique sound, off-beat rhythms and continuously-changing melodies, The Sourkeys are a band whose progressive sense of musical timing is the essence of their appeal.

It’s About Time We Make Poverty History

It’s About Time We Make Poverty History

By the time people are reading this article, Make Poverty History Day will be nearly a month behind us. But obviously, the problem of poverty will not. Many times I have been asked how a single day of ‘awareness’ was supposed to make a difference towards such an overwhelming situation. Some people have gone so far as to call the organizers of the campaign hypocrites.

A Sweet Chunk of KW History

From the school system we were almost forced to accept that the history of southern Ontario towns were extremely dull. Epic battles of glory were for elsewhere; small town Ontario is about simple dependability and slow growth: clearing forests, setting up roads, etc etc. But despite all the tales of churches and walking, once in a while a sweet chunk of history drops to the occasion.

The 7-11 Deadly Sins

The florescent overhead lights glare as you stagger through the glass doors at three in the morning with an unlit cigarette in your mouth and eyes glaring red from the 48th consecutive sleepless hour. There’s an exam tomorrow and it’s time to buckle down and crack the textbook. The counter drones glance blankly at your [...]

On Being a Little Kid

On Being a Little Kid

I remember, quite clearly, what it was like to be small. And by small, I mean really small. Knee-high, out-of-sight, toddler small. Maybe it’s the clarity of the memories, or maybe their sheer distance from my clumsy and inconveniently large current self, but I’ve been reflecting quite often recently on what it was like to be two, or four, discovering the world anew.

Now Is The Time

Now is the time I’m going to get straight A’s. It’s time I pick up that book and read it. It’s time to look for a job, begin graduate applications, meet with the prof, go to the bank, volunteer somewhere – anywhere! – take out the garbage…all before I graduate. Almost four years of student [...]

What You Already Know

It is said that Western people have a linear sense of time, and that other people of the world do not. In the second case, replace “other peoples” with any indigenous race or culture you would like; if they’ve been in a TLC documentary or discussed in your anthropology class, chances are they “don’t have [...]

Why We All Live By THEIR Time

Time, for us, is something which always has and belong to them, that is, other people. They way in which they, and therefore you, experience time is unique among living things. If you own a cat or dog you probably have observed that their time seems unstructured. Likewise, your pets probably think that your life [...]

The Evolution of Cine-Slang

Since the invention of cinema by the Lumière Brothers in 1895, the film has been criminally denied its deserved status in the art world. I’m not blaming anyone in particular, and I’m certainly not pointing my finger towards poor filmmaking and poor films. We can blame them for, say, school shootings and the teen suicide rate (not to mention unwanted pregnancy).

Gonzo: Collisions in Time

I was corporeally sandwiched between two pillars of chronology: an inept date and a deadline. Time existed neither before nor after, and with a head full of solitude there would be no time for respite in dreams of the future. Reverie died as the chronometer began ticking down. Charged with the onerous task of delivering [...]

Fashion & Time: The Ultimate Shoplift

All around us we hear words like “vintage”, “funky”, “retro”, and “oldschool” that are used to describe the latest trend in fashion. Isn’t that a bit of an oxymoron, though? How can vintage styles be the “latest” in mainstream clothing? It’s true, though, isn’t it?

On Art and Excrement

Destroy, create. Consume, produce. Eat, defecate. In this culture where we continually feed off our environment, who is hungrier than the starving artist? The artist’s jaws bite, chew and break down the world, tasting and interpreting culture with sensitive palettes. In an act of cannibalism, the artist devours art, subsequently producing new art through digestive [...]

You Won’t Fool the Children of the Revolution

Nineteen-ninety-six was an important year for me. It was…wait! Let me start again…Let’s travel through time.

When I was a young lad, I didn’t come to dinner one night when my parents called because I was playing world 8-4 on Super Mario Bros: the final castle. Killing King Koopa was more important to me than eating my greens. This did not happen in 1996. When I was in grade nine, I brought the game Quake home and played it for twelve hours consecutively. During these twelve hours, I ate six ice cream bars. This did not happen in 1996 either.

TIME

TIME

Image by: Nicole Barker We’re currently living in a society where time is a valuable resource that no one seems to have enough of, or know exactly where to find some more of. We expect everything to be ready as soon as possible, to suit our personal needs. It seems someone has taken the world, [...]

Time and its Grip on Life

Ever wonder why, in this fast-paced democratic regime that is North America, we as free inhabitants with so many liberties prescribed to us, are, at the same time, so constrained by the boundaries of time? From the day we were born to the inevitable day of our passing, time is something that we absolutely abhor [...]

Time to Burn Some Books

I know some brilliant writers. I know some brilliant, talented, insightful writers. As a pointless drifter of an Arts major, I’m constantly asked about what I want to do with the rest of my life. Originally, I used to tell them the truth: I want to be a writer. “What, so like a reporter? Or [...]

Time Machine

How long is forever when it’s forever that we stride Along the rim of this tick (Tick ticking) bomb of time How long is the moment The moment that we live The moment where we feel alive And slam the hands that tick How long does it take It take to find this seat Where [...]

Take Your Time

All I want to do is make every single clock just. stop. I want to place periods after every letter and every word in order to make my life a little less hectic and a little more idle. I savour the time when nothing seems to exist except me and my writing, and the day [...]

Nostalgia: Missing Stories

Thinking about time is always a complicated process. It is an all encompassing concept, such a grandiose notion. Time. I automatically associate the past with nostalgia. What a strange concept “nostalgia” is. Not only the thought of it, but the feeling; that longing feeling. But I love how it is totally malleable. My problem is [...]

Untitled

Quickly walking away across the street, while hoping get to the bus in time, I am wishing I was back home where sleeping would dream. Working fast, I am eating a disgusting bag of chips, while pondering my route as time is running out and I need to go and do. Planning by wandering and [...]

Reflections

Looking into the mirror, Was struck with terror, There, a reflection of an aged, His life, dull and faded, For a moment, was horrified, Couldn’t move, was stupefied, Is the mirror deceptive? Or mind is being imaginative? The reflection had dark circles, Was nothing but wrinkles, Hairs in a mess, Wore a torn dress, Unshaven [...]

Long Walk As A Woman

Walking alone at night she stand, strides with the confidence of dear. Walking alone at night. Dark lit street Steady thought out steps. Alone Alone with all the awareness that fear drives. There is always the ominous sound of following foot steps. The instinct to run, at a moments Notice The Shadow of violence that [...]

Prose and Short Story

the fragmented self. the splintered self. the self as a shard of glass. i broke a mirror once. i shattered my image, watched as my hand shattered my image before me. i broke ‘me’ into tiny shards. these shards are like the facets of the self. the mirror is made of shards of glass that [...]
